2012 CCC is in the Books

The 2012 Cape Cod Classic concluded Sunday with 18 individual matches. Flight winners were determined based upon points earned during both days of the competition. In the Nationwide flight George Burke collected 3.5 points out of a possible 5 points to claim first place. Mike Connolly was second with 3 points. Gary Townsend took 3rd with 2 points and Greg Martin was the cellar dweller with 1.5 points. The PGA Tour flight was won by Joe Iannone who won 4 of 5 matches on the weekend. John Geary was second with 3 points. David Rowe finished 3rd with 2.5 points and new-comer Gary Rubinstein finished 4th with a half point. In the Champions Tour flight Dave Casperowitz rallied on Sunday to win all three matches, earn 3 points and win the Champions flight by tiebreaker. Chuck Nally also earned 3 points but finished 2nd. Seth Shulman and Brandon Marsh tied for 3rd with 2 points each. Dave Casperowitz's final round 77 (net 63) earned him low net honors and first place money in the Sunday cash pool. Joe Iannone's back nine 35 helped him claim second place money.

Thanks to everyone for coming out, and thanks to Seth Shulman for all the hard work organizing the golf tournament.  See you next year!

It's That Time Again!

It's 10 PM on June 7th and I'm excited.  I have an 8AM flight tomorrow morning to Boston.  Seth is picking me up at Logan and my annual Cape Cod Classic weekend will begin!  54 holes of golf in 3 days (maybe a few more).  The usual suspects will be there, and a few new faces too.  Seth will be barking orders at everyone and nobody will pay attention.  The golf will be a blast.  The courses will be awesome.  There will be lots of close matches and lots of stories to go along with them.  A few dollars will change hands.  There will be some card games and pizza and beer.  It will be a great time to catch up with old friends while playing my favorite game.  It will be a great time whether I pay good or bad.  And it will be over too soon.

Bags are packed I'm ready to go!  Cape Cod Classic 2012 here I come...

Final Round of CCC Postponed Due to Rain

The 20011 Cape Cod Classic will have to conclude later in the year .  Heavy rains forced the closing of Old Barnstable County Fairgrounds Golf Course on Sunday, and doomed the final round of this year's CCC.  After playing 36 holes in the rain on Saturday, most participants were happy with the decision to put off the final round until the weather improves.  Some suggested divine intervention was responsible for the CCC rain out and "mandatory rest period" forced on the aging field.

Going into the final Round Seth Shulman held a fragile lead in the Champions Flight.  The PGA flight was a complete toss-up with Rowe, Iannone and Geary tied at 1 point.  Martin and Townsend lead the Nationwide Flight with 2 points.

A date for the completion of the CCC is not yet known.  Early August is probably the earliest possible rain date given the full schedules of the participants.

Seth Shulman and Chuck Nally want to thank everyone for playing and for braving the wet conditions Saturday.  The rescheduled final round will be posted to this page and communicated via email as soon as it is scheduled.

The 2011 Cape Cod Classic is almost here!

It has been a year since the European squad thrashed the American team at the battle on the dunes.   The Americans have turned and run leaving the Europeans to spar amongst themselves in 2011.    The flights have been determined, the players are getting ready, the money is on the line, who will dominate the classic in 2011?  We will know next weekend!

Let the Cape Cod Classic begin!

I'm psyched!

Dennis Highlands selected as site of Friday warm-up round

The Friday warm-up round of the 2010 CCC will be a great opportunity for the American and International squads to get to know each other before the real competition begins on Saturday. Tee times will start at 2 PM, but get there early to meet all the competitors and maybe have a beer or two. Dennis Highlands is a great track with lots of sand (of course it's Cape Cod!) and many opportunities to put a new ball in play! Plans are to mix the groups on Friday and play foursome vs. foursome. Rumor has it that a cook out will be held at the beach house of Jim Shea after the last putt is holed.

More details to follow...

The Americans are coming!

We have been challenged! Jim Shea and the participants of the "Shea Invitational" have challenged the CCC pros to see who will be the Champions of Cape Cod! Putting the two tournaments together will add a little spark to the new Cape Cod Classic and expand the field from 12 to 24 players! As before, the Ryder Cup style event will be a team match play event with team points earned for each individual match and a small cash pool for additional player incentive! Jim Shea will captain his "American" squad while Seth Shulman and I will co-captain the International team.

Details are being worked out and will be posted here as they are finalized. If you are not yet signed up, please reach out to Jim or Seth to reserve your spot in this year's event.

The CCC will be contested June 11, 12 and 13, 2010 in sunny Cape Cod!

2009 Cape Cod Classic is in the Books

The 2009 Cape Cod Classic finished in dramatic fashion on Sunday with the defending champion Gorse Gods holding on for a 10 to 8 victory. Captain Chuck Nally noted that the 2009 tournament is the closest contest in years. "Any 1 match could have changed the entire outcome", he said. "Congratulations to the Sandbaggers for their courageous effort".

The Sandbaggers held the overnight lead Saturday after winning 3 matches and halving another for a 3 1/2 to 2 1/2 advantage. The Gorse Gods got the lead back on Sunday morning by winning 3 matches and halving 2 more of the 6 individual morning contests. They held on with 3 victories and a half on the back nine for the slim 10 to 8 victory.

Special thanks to Seth Shulam for all his efforts organizing the tournament and making the 2009 CCC another awesome weekend.

Get Ready to Rumble!

George Burke has filled the 12th and final spot in this years CCC. The field is full, the teams are set and it's time to let the games begin.

Captain Chuck will bring his defending champion Gorse Gods to defend the cup. This is a very strong team, and if victorious, will capture the cup for the 4th year in a row. The Sandbaggers once won it 5 years in a row so there will be no pity party for those guys... The team includes:

Chuck Nally
Bill Price
Joe Iannone
Greg Girard
Mike Connolly
Greg Martin

Seth Shulman and his tired lot of three-putters may have something to say about who goes home with the cup this year. They include:

Seth Shulman
John Geary
Brandon Marsh
David Rowe
Gary Townsend
George Burke

Teams and handicaps are posted on the blog site at http://capecodclassic.blogspot.com/. Feel free to post a comment or two or sign up to receive twitter updates live! Just click the "follow me on twitter" link at the bottom of the page.

I guess it's time to update this site. I'm looking forward to another year of the Cape Cod Classic. Seth says it's a smaller group this year and a much easier job for the Commish. It seems to get harder and harder to fill the field each year, everyone is so busy. It's great that a few of us can continue to make this happen. Once again, Seth has done allot of work and needs to be commended.

I opened an account on Twitter under the username CapeCodClassic. Feel free to set up your own account on twitter and follow CapeCodClassic. I will be tweeting out the results and lots of color commentary. Friends and family can follow along with what is happening over the weekend.

Go Gorse Gods!

Big Brown or Gorse Gods

Big Brown is the favorite to win the triple crown this weekend.  Can the Gorse Gods win three Cape Cod Cups in a row???

Blowin' Smoke

The REAL question for the week is who will burn the most tobacco this weekend:
7-1: JIMMY P... Smokes more cigars than Monica Lewinski
5-2: GREG... The new guy might catch them by surprise
3-1: JOE I... Very versatile, smokes cigars and will bum a cigarette as well
2-1: GREG G... Dinunzio wanna be is still the favorite
28-1 SETH S... No time to smoke... too busy pondering why he always picks D. Rowe

Champions Division

Is Charlie playing in the new Seniors / Champions Tour division? Seth made me ask this.
